Method & assumptions

Calculate an overnight shift of less than 24 hours with an unpaid break. Equal start and end times mean zero hours.

((end − start + 1440) mod 1440 − break) ÷ 60

Worked example

21:00 → 09:00; 30 min → 11.5 h

Limits & important notes

Dates use UTC calendar arithmetic. Weekdays exclude Saturdays and Sundays only, not holidays. Date ranges exclude the end date. Shift hours do not adjust for daylight-saving changes.
